New York City has an incredible foodie scene. From amazing restaurants, to cocktail bars and yes, bakeries. It’s probably one of the things I love most about this city. This city is a cultural melting pot, so there are bakeries that can satisfy any craaving you may have. From iconic New York traditional bakeries, to Italian American cookies (my favorite) and some of the best french bakeries that rival any boulangerie in Paris. These are some of my favorite bakeries to try in New York City.

Favorite French Bakeries In NYC
For classic French techniques like laminated doughs including croissants, pain au chocolat and the like, these are a few of my favorites to check out. While many bakeries in this list may offer a great croissant, these are bakeries that truly represent the French techniques and aesthetics of a great Parisian bakery.
Balthazar Bakery
You’ve probably heard of Balthazar the restaurant, but their bakery is equally as incredible. They also serve quite a few coffee shops around the city. Try French classics like a croissant, eclair or their incredible breads from a traditional baguette or pain de siegle, a french rye sourdough.
Dominique Ansel Bakery
Dominique Ansel is a notorious, James Beard award winner, pastry chef from France. You may have heard of the Cronut, a viral pastry that uses laminated dough, and fried to perfection. Then it’s stuffed and usually frosted with something delicious. But don’t overlook the classics like a traditional Cannelé or Dominique’s Kouign Amann, known as the DKA. Plus, you can enjoy savory sandwiches and quiche.
L’Appartment 4F
Started in an actual apartment 4F in Cobble Hill (ironically, the same building I did my NYC month long stays in) L’Appartment 4F serves up incredible french pastries. They are also known for their viral croissant cereal, which yes, is fantastic but costs a pretty penny. I really love the raspberry croissant here. They recently opened a second location the West Village.
Lafayette Bakery
There is almost always a line out the door at Lafayette bakery. This NoHo staple is the spot to go to if you want to try a filled croissant. You can also dine here as it’s a restaurant and bakery.
Petit Chou
This tiny bakery is serving up incredible pastries and even beautiful cakes. The breakfast croissandwich is a must try, and the chocolate chip cookie is a favorite. Definitely add this to your East Village bakery tour.
Cute NYC Bakeries—Bakeries That Double As Great Cafes
These are the kinds of bakeries you want to pull up a seat and hang out while enjoying great baked goods, coffee and more. While they may not perfectly fit into a French cafe, or a traditional NYC or Italian one, these are simply great spots serving up incredible food and baked items.
La Cabra Bakery
Born out of Denmark, La Cabra is another East Village favorite with two other locations. A bakery in SoHo and a roastery in Bushwick. You can’t go to a Danish bakery without getting a cardamom bun, one of my favorites in the city.

Sant Ambroeus Gelateria and Coffee Bar
Next to the Sant Ambroeus restaurant, is the incredible Sant Ambroeus Gelateria and Coffee Bar. And here you can grab a coffee, gelato and an incredible slice of their principessa cake. This is also a great cafe in SoHo for people watching. I once spotted Selena Gomez here.

Librae Bakery
While they are known for their French pastries like incredible laminated doughs, this is actually a Bahraini inspired bakery. I really love their savory baked goods like their salmon foccacia but my favorite was hands down the loomi babka bun. It’s an original to Librae and has lemon curd with flecks of black lime in a twisted brioche dough that becomes caramelized when baked. It’s a favorite.
Maman
Bakery meets casual breakfast or lunch spot, Maman is all over the city and is a consistent, solid choice. You can grab breakfast or lunch here, or just stick to their baked goods and a great chai latte.
Poppy’s
Head to Cobble Hill or Brooklyn Heights for Poppy’s wonderful pastries and sandwiches. You can really go here for breakfast or lunch if you want a heartier meal and not just a pastry. I personally love the cardamom morning bun and their chai lattes are great. Their shops also have a small home goods section to shop and the Brooklyn Heights location also serves up rotisserie chickens.
Breads Bakery
I absolutely love this bakery. They have everything you’d need from classic French pastries, rugalach, chocolate chip banana bread (a personal favorite), challah, babka and baguettes. This is a true bakery cranking out really great baked goods. Plus, a full espresso coffee bar of drinks.
This bakery also has a small food menu for breakfast and lunch. And there are several locations across the city from the East Village to the Upper East Side and beyond.
Best Italian Bakeries In NYC
Veniero’s Pasticceria & Caffe
A traditional Italian bakery with classic Italian butter cookies by the pound, rainbow cookies and lots of cakes. But thing this bakery is known for is their cheesecake. I personally skip their cookies, but reach for a small cheesecake as the perfect hostess gift when you need to bring dessert.
Unregular Bakery
What started as a pizza business, and has since expanded to an Italian bakery in Union Square, try Unregular Bakery for a modern twist on Italian classics.
Pasticceria Rocco
Nestled on a cute street in the West Village (there’s also a Brooklyn location too), I love Pasticceria Rocco bakery for classic New York Italian cookies. From classic butter cookies, cannolis and lobster tails, they’ve got you covered. Get a few to try by the pound, or pick up a slice of cheesecake.

Must Try Bakeries In New York City
These are the must try bakeries in NYC for a few reasons. This list includes iconic favorites that have been popular for years like Levain bakery cranking out giant cookies to Magnolia Bakery who are known for their light and fluffy banana pudding. But this list also includes a few newer more viral spots that I think are 100% worth visiting like Hani’s for literally anything on their menu, I love this spot, and Sunday Morning for their cinnamon rolls.
Levain Bakery
You can’t make a list of bakeries in NYC without including the king of cookies, Levain. These large cookies are dense, and packed with mix-ins. My personal favorite is the new toffee coffee. It’s insanely good. But you can never go wrong with their classic chocolate chip pecan.
Magnolia Bakery
An iconic bakery serving up fluffy banana pudding, and seasonal flavors too. I personally like my banana pudding more dense, but yes this is delicious. They also have cupcakes and cakes, but you can’t visit NYC and not try the iconic banana pudding.
Sunday Morning
If you’re into a cinnamon roll, this may be the best one I’ve ever had. Sunday Morning is located in the East Village and there is almost always a line. But hurry, because they do sell out. I prefer the berry cinnamon rolls, or their classic cream cheese. They also have rotating flavors like pistachio mascarpone. or Brooklyn blackout. They also have a full service espresso bar.
Radio Bakery
Located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Radio Bakery is a tiny but incredible bakery. From their sweet morning pastries, like their seasonal rhubarb cream cheese croissant, or a savory scallion sesame twist, there is something for everyone. Plus, don’t skip their lunch sandwiches. These are some of the best sandwiches I have had in NYC. Their housemade breads and focaccia are the vessels for some incredible combinations.

Hani’s Bakery
This is one of my favorite bakeries in the East Village neighborhood. Chef Miro used to be at Gramercy Tavern, but is now serving up his own sweets and savory pastries at Hani’s, pronounced “honey’s”. Try the cinnamon roll, the seasonal tarts and be sure to grab a strawberry matcha. Their smoked salmon focaccia toast is always on my radar. Please report back if you do, because it looks insane.
Supermoon Bakehouse
Located in the Lower East Side, Supermoon Bakehouse is a must visit. Their creations are so unique, beautiful and feel like masterpieces. I had a cornflake crunch cookie once that absolutely blew my mind.
Best Cake Bakeries In NYC
While many of the bakeries in today’s post may offer great cakes for events, like Veniero’s, Brooklyn Sweet Spot an dmore, these are ones that I think of specifically for cake!
From Lucie
The most gorgeous cakes you’ll ever see. From Lucie makes stunning cakes topped with gorgeous flowers. I picked up a slice of their vegan carrot cake and I never would’ve known it didn’t have dairy, eggs and butter in it. One of the best carrot cakes I have ever had. Get a slice, or a whole cake for parties. Plus, grab a chocolate chip cookie while you’re here too.
Mia’s Brooklyn Bakery
A simple New York style bakery with a mix of butter cookies, cakes, pies, tarts and croissants. They also offer custom cakes. The Brooklyn location is the original, and you can dine in and sit to enjoy your sweet treat and a coffee. With three locations, one in Times Square, Upper East Side, and Brooklyn, you can try these classics around the city.
Cheap Bakeries In NYC
The pricing in NYC will be a shock to just about anyone visiting, but there are a few go-to spots where I like to grab a great pastry or sweet treat without spending $10.
Molly’s Cupcakes
This is such a cute spot where you bulid your own cupcake. And it doesn’t break the bank. Choose your cupcake size, cake, frosting and any toppings. You can easily snag a delicious cupcake for about $3.

Mary O’s Irish Soda Bread Shop
I was hesitant to put this on the list because Mary O’s is only serving up one baked good, Irish soda bread. But here’s the thing, it’s one of the best things I’ve eaten since living here. It’s that good. They also make homemade blackberry jam that they plop on top with a good hunk of Kerrygold butter.
Chinatown Bakeries
If you’re looking for cheap eats, my number one tip is to head to Chinatown. The prices can not be beat. There are a few great bakeries to try like Spongies or Kam Hing Coffee Shop serving up super affordable (I’m talking $1) sponge cakes and coffees.
Vegan Bakeries In NYC
Cloudy Donut Co
These may be the most beautiful donuts I’ve ever seen. And they’re vegan, which also just blows my mind. From unique flavors like margarita to blackberry mint mojito and classics like powdered jelly and strawberry. They’re almost too pretty to eat!
Clementine Bakery
Nestled in the charming Brooklyn neighborhood of Clinton Hill, this vegan bakery and sandwich shop is serving up donuts, croissants, pies and more. Plus, they also have a vegan and gluten free menu to choose from.
Best Black Owned Bakeries In NYC
Lee Lee’s Baked Goods
This black owned bakery is located in Harlem and is known for their rugelach, which is a tradtiional Jewish cookie for holidays, but this is the spot to try one! Grab a slice of cake, cookies or pie at this charming little spot.
The Pastry Box
This tiny shop in the East Village is known for their chocolate chip cookies. It’s a quarter pound cookie with the most perfect balance of sweet, chocolate and a pinch of salt. A must try if you’re in the area.
The Brooklyn Sweet Spot
Located in charming Clinton Hill, The Brooklyn Sweet Spot is serving up cakes, cupcakes, banana pudding and classic chocolate chip cookies.
