When I moved to NYC, there were a few things that were always kind of top of mind for me to do. A sort of NYC bingo card, if you will. And one of those things, besides Central Park picnics with friends, and catching Broadway shows, was always to go to a sample sale. And, to get a really good deal. The kind that when someone compliments that item, you would be so thrilled to tell them “omg, I got this at a sample sale, it was the best deal”.
And friends, I finally did it. I scored not one but two bags at the Mansur Gavriel sample sale. I had been wanting one of their signature bucket bags for years and I am thrilled to have finally snagged one at such a good deal. It was such a thrill to walk in and see all of the bags organized by color and style to make it really easy to shop. I went early and was one of the first people to walk in.
If you’re ready to do some sample sale shopping, this is your post! I’m going to fill you in on what a sample sale is, how to shop them and what to know so you too can find a hidden gem for your closet and have a fun story to tell.

What Is A Sample Sale?
A sample sale is when a designer hosts a several-day sale of items they are trying to unload from their inventory. It can be a variety of true samples from the brand (this is when a brand makes a handful of items for potential buyers but then maybe doesn’t pick up the style for a full run), or discontinued colors or styles, and honestly, sometimes even recent inventory. It can be such a great thrill to find something you’ve been wanting, or discover a gem in the racks. Here’s everything to know about sample sales.
What Is Pricing Like At A Sample Sale?
Pricing can really vary from brand to brand. But generally speaking, prices are labeled by category. Shoes, tops, sweaters, dresses, will all have a single price no matter what the items may be. There will usually be a sheet hung around the place so you know what you’re shopping for.
The prices are definitely worth it for the most part. Deals can vary from 30 to 80% off retail. It’s always good to know your prices when you go to ensure you’re getting a great deal for something you really do want.
But it’s important to do a little research, too. For example, when I went to the Mansur Gavriel sample sale, the mini red bucket bag I bought was $145 at the sale, and $250 online. While yes I still got a deal, it wasn’t a MASSIVE savings either. However, they had a classic black bag that I had been wanting for years that was currently selling online for $595 and was selling for $145 at the sample sale. That to me was worth getting up out of the house at 8am to head to this sale.
What To Expect At A Sample Sale
Some sample sales are definitely better than others. And it really does depend on when you go. The good stuff will go fast for sure, so it’s key to get there on the first day if you can. Product can be a mix of older items, to unique pieces that were never sold to the masses.
Trying things on at a sample sale can be a bit chaotic. Usually, you’re allowed to bring a limited number of items into a group changing room. I would recommend dressing in a bra you know you’ll wear with most things (this is always a tip when shopping for clothes) so you can get the best idea of how something will fit.
No one cares that you’re in your underwear trying things on eiher. We’re all there to find a good deal. If you’re more modest and don’t feel comfortable doing this, I’d suggest wearing some biker shorts so you can easily try things on without much of an issue.
One thing I do love about a sample sale that I’ve discovered quickly is that the sale still feels sort of merchandised. Styles are usually grouped together, which is a plus. Not always, but I have found this to be the case most of the time. There will be some digging with onesies and twosies that they have on some racks. I’m not personally a digger, but I do like to browse those areas anyway to make sure there isn’t a great gem in there!
These pieces are also final sale. There are no returns. If you find you don’t love something, you can easily resell it on Poshmark or eBay.

Is It Worth Going To A Sample Sale?
I’ve now been to a handful of sample sales in New York City. Some were towards the end, some closer to the start of the sales. I think it really depends and it can be hit or miss. That’s why it feels sort of like a hunt and an adventure. Each time you go you may find a gem, but not always. I think it’s also good to have an open mind, but also be mindful of your closet needs. You can easily buy things you will never wear or use because it was on sale and you got excited about the deal.
If you’re also obsessed with a particular brand, it can really be worth going. You’ll know the pieces, the fit and be excited about scoring something at a brand you really do love.
How Long Are The Lines?
The lines can definitely vary based on the brand and what day the sale is. The more in-demand brands that are high end are going to have serious lines. You can hire a line sitter to do this for you if you’re really serious and don’t have the time to wait in line. There’s the Same Ole Line Dudes or you can probably hire someone on TaskRabbit too.
When I went to the Mansur Gavriel sale, it was day two or three of the sale. I arrived about 20 minutes prior to doors opening and was 4th in line.
